The Office of Information Security strives to provide a comprehensive set of tools, services, and information to empower members of our community to protect themselves and their data. These priorities are evident in our stated mission, “to build a sustainable information security program that balances the need to protect with the need to support the missions of education, research, and clinical care.”
The Office of Information Security’s website is frequently updated with current and timely resources to assist our community members in developing secure workflows. Today, our office would like to highlight a few particularly important resources.
The Secure Storage and Communication Services page includes a matrix comparison of available communication platforms as well as the types of data that can be used on these platforms.
The Data Classification page includes descriptions of different types of sensitive data and information to help users understand the best way to store, process, transfer, and share their data.
The Encryption page describes and explains the basics of encryption and provides instructions for encrypting devices and sending encrypted e-mails. To learn more about encryption, please read our recent article, “Better Protection with Encryption”.
The Phishing page includes safety tips for avoiding phishing attempts as well as information about what users should do if they suspect they are being targeted by a phishing attempt.
The Password Policy page includes our official password policy statement, detailing the institutional requirements for password management. In addition, on our site, we post articles such as “Ask the Experts: Password Management,” detailing strategies that users can adopt to best protect their passwords.
