Meet Your InfoSec Team: Steve Bochte, Information Security Architect

  • Steven Bochte at the beach
  • Steven Bochte skydiving

Steve Bochte, Information Security Architect, brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the InfoSec team. Steve remembers being interested in IT and security as a grade-schooler, and these fields still appeal to his love for fixing things and improving processes today. After taking the CISSP exam in 2007, he started exploring the world of InfoSec. At WashU, he “assesses compliance and designs security controls for university and regulatory requirements.”

This isn’t Steve’s first experience working in higher education. He worked at UW-Madison for ten years before transitioning to a corporate role. Steve loves his work at WashU because of the “enthusiasm for collaboration and information sharing that exists in academia, and the passion to give back to the community and world.”

His varied career experiences taught him that “investing in process building, project management, and agility can yield enormous benefits,” and while innovation is great, “reinventing the wheel can be an inefficient, expensive idea – if you’re going to do so, make sure it’s the best option.”

When Steve is not working, he can be found in the sky. He says, “skydiving is a blast.” Once safely on the ground, he works on a 3D-printed full Mandalorian costume and reads books by Erik Larson. A tool that makes Steve’s life easier is his Instant Pot for good and quick dinners!

Steve recommends ISC(2) for hundreds of security-focused educational materials and webinars. Finally, Steve wants to leave you with two essential pieces of advice: “Think before you click! If in doubt, just don’t click,” and “only you can prevent forest fires!”
