National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

Founded in 1901, NIST is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, focused on advancing the “measurement science, standard, and technology” to promote innovation and competition with the goal of increasing economic prosperity and enhancing quality of life.

In cybersecurity, NIST is extremely well known for the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, as well the NIST Risk Management Framework (RMF), NIST 800-53 control guidance, NIST Digital Identity Guidelines and others. The overall NIST mission is to “promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life.” NIST is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
