Institutional Review Board

An institutional review board’s role is to ensure that research involving human subjects is
done ethically and meets federal requirements and regulations. It is a committee made of
researchers, non-researchers with expertise in other areas, and community members from which the pool of subjects is drawn. All research involving human subjects funded by the federal government, and all research involving products regulated by the FDA, must be approved by the IRB.
