On Tuesday, October 19th, Operations & Facilities Management Department, the Office of Sustainability, WashU Office of Information Security, and BJC Information Security are teaming up to bring the WashU community e-waste recycling and confidential paper shredding services. All are welcome to bring accepted items to the collection drive. All confidential papers and hard drives will be securely and safely recycled by certified vendors.

  • WUSM: October 19, 7:30am – 11:00am, Food Truck Drive located off of Scott Ave and Taylor Ave
    • Outdated scrubs will also be collected at the WUSM drive. Please see the Scrubs Recycling Drive event page for more details.

Electronic waste (or “e-waste”) has historically had a very low rate of recycling, at only 12.5%. While it comprises only a small percent of all waste, it represents the vast majority of toxic waste in landfills and is the fastest-growing source of landfill waste. However, when recycled, many highly valuable materials can be recovered from electronics.

“Anything with a cord” can be recycled at this event, including computers and accessories, lawn and garden equipment, power tools, and kitchen appliances.

The following items cannot be accepted:

  • University-owned items
  • Light bulbs
  • Batteries

Most items will be accepted at no cost. Items that require a disposal fee due to hazardous components are listed below:

  • Any tube or big screen TV – $25
  • Any LCD monitor or flat screen TV – $10

Cash, check, or credit cards will be collected onsite.

Proper recycling of computer hard drives and confidential papers plays an important role in securing sensitive and confidential information. To learn more about Cyber Security Awareness Month and related events, visit the WashU Information Security Office website.
