Protected Health Information (PHI)

Any information, including medical records and personal data, that relates to the health status, provision of healthcare, or payment for healthcare that can be linked to a specific individual and is protected under HIPAA regulations.

Protected health information can be about an individual’s past, present, or future mental and physical health, the provision of healthcare to them, or payment for that health care. This information may be: 

  • Transmitted by electronic media
  • Maintained in electronic media; or 
  • Transmitted or maintained in any other form or medium.
