What if you are still running Windows XP or 7 on some of your computers? Extended support for Windows 7 ended on January 14, 2020, over 10 years after the release of Windows 7. Now the operating system no longer receives security updates. Some versions of Windows 10 and 11 are already unsupported. Devices with an unsupported operating system pose a significant threat to our network. If a criminal gets into a device through an unpatched security flaw, they will look for personal information and sensitive data to exploit. Moving to a modern and supported operating system, such as Windows 11, can provide the latest security updates to help keep you and your data safer. It is your responsibility to comply with Information Technology requests to upgrade systems and maintain currency for any equipment you or your department manage unless you receive an approved exception from Information Security.
Software updates can also fix bugs, improve performance, and provide new features. Not updating puts us in jeopardy of being out of compliance with the HIPAA security rule and increases the risk of a reportable incident. Your department or school’s IT support staff can assist in determining which laptops, workstations, and departmental servers need updated software.
