Gramm-Leach Bliley Act (GLBA)

The Gramm-Leach Bliley Act requires financial institutions (i.e., organizations offering consumers financial products, advice, or insurance) to protect their customer’s personal information. Colleges and universities are subject to the regulations set forth in GLBA.

The customer information protected in the GLBA is typically gathered while obtaining a financial product or service. This includes:

  • Customer name
  • Address and phone number
  • Bank account numbers
  • Credit card numbers
  • Income history
  • Credit history
  • Social Security numbers
